Tasar silk, known as Kosa silk in Sanskrit, boasts a captivating history. Today, farmers in Jharkhand and Odisha are making their lives better through its production. The silk extracted from this silkworm thrives not on mulberry trees but on the local Sal, Arjun, and Asan trees, abundant in Odisha and Jharkhand. Out of eight breeds of silkworms available in Odisha, many farmers in the region depend on the tasar' farming of Sukinda Ecorace for their livelihood. To support this vital sericulture industry and uplift the livelihoods of farmers, we initiated the Sukinda Eco Race Conservation Programme in FY 2022–23.
The programme focuses on preserving the native Sukinda Ecorace silkworm breed and its host plants, Asan and Arjun. Through initiatives like providing 10,000 Arjun saplings to farmers and training women in nurturing seedlings, we aim to enhance the Tasar productivity and thereby enable the farmers to secure a better future for themselves.
