Michel Pignolet Montéclair (1667-1737) - Cantate "La mort de Didon"
The drama of Montéclair's Cantata "La mort de Didon" remains within the boundaries of chamber music while its theme derives from the opera. A narrator appears in the last recit to tell briefly of the Carthaginian queen's death and immolation; otherwise, the action is entirely in Dido's own thoughts and words as she learns of Aeneas's desertion. French music found it fullest expression in these brief forms of chamber music, produced between 1700 and 1750. In these first years, the French composers assimilated the Italian cantata style, developing a way of combining poetry, music and French drama.
