We explain what the fudge is going on with the eels in The Witcher, Netflix. Tissia is the "Mother of Eels" in addition to being rector of Aretuza. She ain't Dumbledore and Aretuza ain't Hogwarts. If you don't make it as a sorceress, the girls are turned into eels and act as conduits in the Windmill of Aretuza that powers the magic. Yennefer of Vengaberg discovers Tissia doing this and pleads for her friends and classmates, but Tissia says they have power but not control over the chaos that is magic. When Yennefer returns to the "Windmill" many years later she tries to warn the new novices of their fate.
The eels is a show thing. There is no book or game lore that Aretuza turns failed sorceresses into eels. In the books they go onto be lawyers. Tissia Devries is a very dark character who likes to play God as portrayed by MyAnna Burning the same voice actress who played Anna Henrieta in the Blood and Wine DLC for CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Clips from the Yennefer of Vengaburg featurette, season 1 episode 2 "Four Marks", and season 1 episode 7 "Before a Fall." Gameplay from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt by CD Projekt Red.
