"The Big One" is the sixth and final heist Finale mission in GTA 5. The protagonists: Michael De Santa, Trevor Phillips and Franklin Clinton execute the most ambitious score they've ever attmepted. However, on this occasion the trio are accompanied by Niko Bellic, Carl Johnson, Claude, Tommy Vercetti, Brucie Kibbutz in addition to Chef and Lester Crest.
The "obvious" approach, adopted for the film, involves drilling into the Union Depository using a tunnel bore machine. The gold is then extracted using helicopters and transported onto a moving train. During the transportation phase, Michael and Niko attempt to evade the police, aided by police radio scanners and knowledge of the city roads.
The short film was recorded using the legacy version of the game
I used alleys and shelter to evade police, remaining faithful to the methods encouraged in the game. If you change cars during a police chase without being seen, the player's minimap icon will change from white to grey. This indicates that the player is less likely to be recognised by police from nearby distances. That game mechanic was implemented throughout.
Niko's second vehicle frequently drifts along the roads, a refrence to the GTA IV driving mechanics. To achieve this, I simply altered the car's engine torgue and wheel traction values accordingly.
Franklin, a skilled driver with a special driving ability, was not used as a driver. Instead, Michael is at the wheel. His lack of driving skill and the absence of a special driving ability hopefully makes the outcome less predictable and more suspensful. Also, I had more relative diaoluge to use for Michael and he leads most of the heists throughout the game therefore it seemed fitting he would be a driver.
The getaway is emphasised to a greater extent than the heist itself as most players are familiar with the process of the mission therefore I wanted to make it less predictable (even though it still is predictable).
The Lamborghini crashes as the tyres are not designed for the dirt roads. Also, the powerful V12 created understeer for an inexperienced driver, losing traction and accelerates out of control.
I altered the radio interfaces. This provided hint of a retro appearance to compliment the older GTA characters in the film even if they exist in seperate universes. It also allowed the inclusion of NFL commentry and made it easier to edit with during post.
I cut out an insane amount car chase scenes involving cars flipping and explosions as they seemed unjust for the short movie.
I also experimented with different aspect ratios during filming but eventually settled for the conventional 3840 x 2160.
