In this short video I explain the real-world differences between PLA and PETG when it comes to building motion simulator actuator parts — and why I eventually moved away from PETG for certain components.
PLA and PETG may seem similar, but in engineering builds they behave very differently.
PLA Characteristics
• Higher stiffness (great dimensional accuracy)
• Excellent print detail & tolerance control
• Minimal flex → better structural stability
• Downside: can become brittle, heat-sensitive over time
PETG Characteristics
• Stronger layer bonding
• Better impact resistance
• Handles heat better than PLA
• BUT: more flexible → can cause alignment issues, warping, creep, and structural deflection under load
In my actuator tests, PETG introduced alignment problems and unwanted flex, resulting in increased friction and inconsistent movement. PLA provided a more rigid, stable structure — critical for precision builds like motion actuators.
If you’re building anything load-bearing or motion-critical, this difference really matters.
If you’d like me to cover something specific in more detail — whether in a Short or a full Long video — let me know in the comments. I’m happy to share tests, real failures, fixes, and engineering lessons to help your builds 🔧🔥
