Whiteside, who previously pleaded guilty to felony sexual battery of a minor, was originally sentenced to three years of house arrest and seven years of probation. Despite that sentence, DeSoto County officials say they’ve been working on this federal case since last year.

Whiteside formerly worked at Getwell Church Hernando as a student and outreach coordinator and also served as an assistant basketball coach at DeSoto Central High School.

The case has gained widespread attention, leading Judge Andrew Howorth to step down due to concerns about public statements made by the district attorney. The controversy deepened after school staff, including teachers and a vice principal, submitted character references supporting Whiteside.
