How do you study and play a jazz standard? Everyone has their own methods, but let’s start with the fundamentals.
1. Play chords trying to vary the positions
2. Play the melody exactly as it is written, without interpretation
3. Play the seventh arpeggios in a chosen fingerboard position, one-to-one, rubato
4. Improvising only with the chord tones (arpeggios), trying to construct melodies and moving the rhythm a little
5. Playing the chord scales of the song (modes), one by one, rubato
6. Improvise with scales by underlining on chord notes, use these as long notes.
And then:
✅memorize the chords and the melody
✅repeat the technical and improvisational and learn the others fingerboard positions, eventually connecting them musically
✅analyze harmony and consider alternative scales or harmonic substitutions
✅try to interpret the theme without playing it too different from the original
✅listen to as many versions of the song as possible
✅transcribe licks or whole solos that interest you
✅try to transpose the song in others keys
