🏰 Reis Magos Fort – History

Reis Magos Fort is one of the oldest forts in Goa, India. It is located on the northern bank of the Mandovi River, near the village of Reis Magos, about 7 km from Panaji, the capital of Goa.

📜 Historical Background:

The site originally belonged to the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur.

The fort was rebuilt by the Portuguese in 1551 to guard the narrowest point at the mouth of the Mandovi River and to protect Old Goa, which was then the capital.

It was a key defense structure, working in coordination with Fort Aguada on the opposite side of the river.


🛡️ Strategic Importance:

The fort served both military and residential purposes for the Portuguese.

It housed troops, ammunition, and had strategic cannon placements pointing towards the river.

Due to its location, it offered an excellent view of incoming ships.


⛪ Reis Magos Church:

Next to the fort is the Reis Magos Church, built in 1555.

The name "Reis Magos" means "Three Wise Men" in Portuguese – referring to the Biblical Magi.

The church and fort together represent a significant part of Goa’s Portuguese heritage.


During British rule in the 18th century, the fort was also used by them.

In the 20th century, the fort served as a prison.

It was abandoned for decades and fell into disrepair.



🛠️ Restoration and Present Day:

The fort was restored between 2008 and 2012 by the Reis Magos Heritage Centre, with support from the Archaeological Survey of India and INTACH, led by architect Gerard da Cunha.

Today, the fort is a cultural center, museum, and tourist attraction, showcasing Goa’s history, architecture, and heritage.
