No matter how much physical therapy you’re doing, you’re not going to feel better unless you start doing this. Today I’m going to share 3 great tips to help you relieve back pain naturally, Anat Baniel MethodⓇ NeuroMovementⓇ style.
No matter what kind of chronic back pain treatment you’ve tried before, you’re probably not doing these three things:
1️⃣ Number one: soften through the chest.
I know - it seems counterintuitive, especially in a culture that places such a high value on standing up straight by throwing the shoulders back.
When you tighten through the chest, though, your spine is no longer free to move through your center.
The forces you generate by walking, sitting, whatever, no longer travel all the way through your skeleton. Instead, they get stuck somewhere along the way, causing mechanical stress and low back pain.
2️⃣ Number two: move from the center of your body.
Free your core to move more naturally and dynamically.
One of our mantras in Anat Baniel MethodⓇ NeuroMovementⓇ is “Free the belly!”
So many of my students with chronic back pain have been sucking in their belly for years. Either they’ve been taught to do it in some sport, or they do it to make their stomachs flatter.
When they finally learn to free the belly and move from their center, their back pain naturally starts to go away. 🎉
That’s because when you immobilize the center of your body, any movement you make is essentially tearing you apart.
All that energy you’re using to keep yourself tightly bound up works against free, natural movement of the spine.
So save contracting your core only for those moments when you really need it.
And if you want me to help you figure out when you do and don’t need to contract your belly, check out my movement practice Move and Bloom.
3️⃣ Number three: be gentle with yourself.
If you want to know how to get rid of back pain with exercise or movement, the answer is always GENTLY.
You’ve probably had this pain for some time, and your brain is really, really used to it. In fact, it’s not going to give it up without a fight.
Think about it. Your brain is meant to protect you from sudden changes like fever or dehydration. It will do everything it can to get you back to “normal.”
If your “normal” includes a certain way of moving or holding yourself, your brain will try to push you back in that direction by signaling DANGER. And the best way to signal danger is with PAIN.
BUT, if you make changes really gradually, you can trick your brain into thinking it’s not changing.
Sneaky, huh? Or is it just smart? Either way, it saves you from experiencing as many setbacks on your road to recovery.
These are the 3 NeuroMovementⓇ tips I want you to start using to help you move better and feel better.
