The Lost City of Poompuhar: Graham Hancock's Underwater Discovery

Poompuhar is famous in the Tamil epic Silappathikaram, but is it just a myth? In the 1990s and early 2000s, marine archaeologists and researcher Graham Hancock discovered man-made structures deep underwater. These findings suggest a civilization existed here at the end of the last Ice Age—thousands of years before the Harappan or Egyptian civilizations.

In this video, we analyze the findings of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), the diving expeditions of Graham Hancock, and the tragic halt of government funding for this research.

The Science Behind the Date:
This theory is based on sea-level data. Since the structures are found 23 meters deep, they would have been on dry land around 11,000 years ago (end of the Ice Age). Furthermore, studies by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Bharathidasan University claim Poompuhar’s original harbor might actually be 15,000 years old, making it far older than previously thought.

The Tamil Nadu government has officially ramped up efforts to find this lost city!

New ₹23.6 Crore Project: In late 2025, the TN Government allocated over ₹23 Crores for Phase II of the Poompuhar Heritage Project to further explore the underwater site.

Deep Sea Exploration (Started Sept 2025): The Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology (TNSDA), in collaboration with the Indian Maritime University and NIOT, has launched a new mission using ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) to scan the seabed between Poompuhar and Nagapattinam.

Underwater Museum Plan: There are active government proposals to build a world-class "Underwater Museum" at the site.
