This is the 'Bard' Glider Pilatus B4 slopesoarer made by World Models. No motor at all just pure gliding. Two metre wingspan with metal gear servos throughout and 4 Channel, Elevator, Rudder, Ailerons and Tow Release.
Aquired this model around twenty years ago from Addies Hobbies and this was the first succesful flight.
Flight Review:
Strong westerly wind pushing straight onto the cliffs. I walked halfway down the slope and hand launched the B4. Straight away it needed trim but I held position by working the controls and levelling the wings. Even without a motor it started to climb as long as I kept it moving and stayed aware of distance and depth.
The main focus was energy management. Keeping the aircraft flying without letting it sink too far or drift out of reach. The lift stayed consistent and I managed a stable first section of the flight before putting it down in the bushes. That gave me the chance to adjust trim and reset everything properly.
Second launch was more confident. Flying tighter lines closer to me with more precision and a bit more aggression. Some fast passes over the hills showed how well it still carries speed and responds despite its age.
On landing I could not slow it enough and realised I was going to miss the bush. I pulled up to reposition and hit a pocket of air. That was the end of it. A sudden loss of energy and a catastrophic crash. A clear reminder that slope flying gives and takes very quickly.
