In an interview with NewsX on the Supreme Court proceedings regarding the Kolkata rape case, Sandeep Chachra, Executive Director of ActionAid Association, expressed profound disappointment that, twelve years after the Nirbhaya case, discussions on women’s safety and their right to life remain unfinished agenda raising national concern. Despite numerous legal reforms, including amendments to the POCSO Act, data from the NCRB shows no significant decline in rape cases from 2012 to 2021, with recent cases indicating ongoing issues. Sandeep remarked on the slow pace of investigations and the frequent alignment of law enforcement with perpetrators, as highlighted by the Supreme Court and Bombay High Court's recent observations.
Sandeep pointed out that politics often exploits women's issues for gain, with disturbing data revealing that out of 4,700 legislators, 151 have criminal charges related to violence against women, including 16 serious cases like rape. He supported the Supreme Court's recommendation for a national task force to address gender-based violence in the context of the medical establishment but stressed the need for this body or a similar to address the realities faced by informal sector workers and the broader social issues impacting their safety.
Emphasising the necessity of both legal accountability and a cultural shift, Sandeep urged for institutional reforms to ensure women’s safety and eliminate patriarchal norms. He welcomed the Supreme Court’s stance on protecting peaceful protests and called for an end to the criminalisation of those defending against harassment.
