In my latest live on the DJs, I want to acknowledge a few pioneers I unintentionally left out — and that’s important.
When we talk about the foundation of hip-hop DJ culture in New York City, we cannot only focus on the Bronx. Brooklyn had heavy hitters that helped shape the sound, the style, and the competitive energy of the culture.
DJs like Grandmaster Flowers were instrumental in bringing a disco-driven, turntable-centered approach that influenced an entire generation. Flowers was already moving crowds with precision mixing and a commanding sound system presence.
You also had Brooklyn selectors like Plumber, Maboya, and the legendary Pete DJ Jones, whose blending skills and musical selection helped refine the art of seamless transitions in the disco and early hip-hop era. Pete DJ Jones in particular became one of the most respected DJs citywide for his clean mixes and ability to control a room.
And outside of Brooklyn, we also have to give flowers to figures like DJ Hollywood, whose microphone style heavily influenced early MC routines. His cadence, crowd control, and call-and-response patterns were foundational.
Then there’s Junebug, who was the house DJ at places like the world-famous Disco Fever in the Bronx. His presence in that space placed him at the center of a crucial era when hip-hop was moving from parks and community centers into established club venues.
And of course, Love Bug Starski, who helped bridge the DJ-to-MC evolution and became one of the culture’s most charismatic early voices.
Hip-hop wasn’t built by one borough alone. It was a city-wide ecosystem — Bronx innovation, Brooklyn refinement, Harlem flavor, Queens presence — all feeding off one another in real time.
So I wanted to correct that publicly and give proper respect. These DJs were not side notes — they were architects of the sound, the style, and the competitive spirit that shaped early hip-hop culture.
History deserves precision. And pioneers deserve acknowledgment.
