Recently a colony of gigantic crows settled the trees in front of my windows, so I ended up listening to their stories... this is the scary conversation between two crows over what should be their next meal, an ancient story that inspired several ballads (Child # 26). And Twa Corbies is probably one of the oldest versions, originated in Scotland, late middle ages. My interpretation uses a Martin terz guitar (Marty Robbins LE, adirondack/mahogany), tuning FCFA#CF (terz DADGAD), 2-part harmonies, some percussions, and the real voices of my friends the crows.
Twa Corbies
As I was walking a' alane,
I heard twa corbies makin' a mane.
The tane untae the tither did say, O.
Whaur sail we gang and dine the day, O.
Whaur sail we gang and dine the day?
It's in ahint yon auld fail dyke
I wot there lies a new slain knight;
And naebody kens that he lies there O.
But his hawk and his hound, and his lady fair, O.
But his hawk and his hound, and his lady fair.
His hound is to the hunting gane
His hawk to fetch the wild-fowl hame,
His lady ta'en anither mate, O.
So we may mak' our dinner swate, O.
So we may mak' our dinner swate.
Ye'll sit on his white hause-bane,
And I'll pike oot his bonny blue e'en
Wi' mony a lock o' his gowden hair O.
We'll theek oor nest when it grows bare, O.
We'll theek oor nest when it grows bare.
There's mony a ane for him maks mane
But nane sail ken whaur he is gane
O'er his white banes when they are bare O.
The wind sail blaw for evermair, O.
The wind sail blaw for evermair.
As I was walking a' alane,
I heard twa corbies makin' a mane.
The tane untae the tither did say, O.
Whaur sail we gang and dine the day, O.
Whaur sail we gang and dine the day?
The Two Crows
As I was walking all alone,
I heard two crows making a moan;
One said to the other,
"Where shall we go and dine today?
Where shall we go and dine today?"
"In behind that old turf wall,
I sense there lies a newly slain knight;
And nobody knows that he lies there,
But his hawk, his hound and his lady fair
But his hawk, his hound and his lady fair."
"His hound is to the hunting gone,
His hawk to fetch the wild-fowl home,
His lady's has taken another mate,
So we may make our dinner sweet.
So we may make our dinner sweet."
"You will sit on his white neck-bone,
And I'll peck out his pretty blue eyes;
With one lock of his golden hair
We'll thatch our nest when it grows bare
We'll thatch our nest when it grows bare."
"Many a one for him is moaning,
But nobody will know where he is gone;
Over his white bones, when they are bare,
The wind will blow for evermore
The wind will blow for evermore."
As I was walking all alone,
I heard two crows making a moan;
One said to the other,
"Where shall we go and dine today?
Where shall we go and dine today?"
