Come Follow Me Warm Up: Doctrine and Covenants 117:1-8

Описание: In Doctrine and Covenants section one hundred and seventeen the Lord admonishes, through Joseph Smith, William Marks and Newel K Whitney regarding their earthly possessions, or stewardships. The Lord knew they would be concerned how to settle their business as he asked them and encouraged them not to tarry in verse two. In verse five He encourages them to let go and obey His commandments.
Then in verses six through eight the Lord reminds William and Newel of his power and possessions. “For have I not the fowls of heaven, and also the fish of the sea, and the beasts of the mountains? Have I not made the earth? Do I not hold the destinies of all the armies of the nations of the earth? Therefore, will I not make solitary places to bud and to blossom, and to bring forth in abundance? saith the Lord. Is there not room enough on the mountains of Adam-ondi-Ahman, and on the plains of Olaha Shinehah, or the land where Adam dwelt,…”
William and Newel needed to be reminded that the Lord has all things in His hand. He is the one who provides the abundance of the earth according to His will and according to the willingness of those he loves. Then the Lord finishes with this thought, “that you should covet that which is but the drop, and neglect the more weighty matters?” He did not want either of them to hold on to anything that would keep them from accomplishing the mission he had for them at this time. He needed to know that William and Newel would be willing to “let go” and trust in the Lord to make them as prosperous as they would need to be to accomplish their mission in earth and to do their part in building the foundation of the Kingdom of God here on earth.
My invitation for this coming week. What are we holding on to that is causing us to tarry longer than we should? Maybe we are at a certain stage of life and nervous about moving onto the next? Maybe we hold a grudge and are not sure what life would look like if we let it go. Maybe we have many physical possessions that we feel define us, but we know we should really get rid of to make life simpler and more orderly. I know as we let go and focus on the “more weighty matters” the Lord will bless us through the grace and power of His Son to help us not only know what we should do, but also to have the faith to do it. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
