Chronology & Notes

Background

1761 – Hyder Ali became de facto ruler of Mysore (after overpowering Wodeyar ministers).

He built a strong modern army with French help, alarming neighbors.


Causes

Mysore’s expansion → Threatened the Nizam of Hyderabad, Marathas, and British East India Company.

1767 – A Triple Alliance (British + Nizam + Marathas) was formed against Hyder Ali.


Course of the War

1767 – War begins.

Hyder Ali initially defeated the Marathas but lost some territory.


1768 – British captured Mangalore and advanced towards Mysore.

Hyder Ali skillfully broke the alliance:

Won over the Nizam with diplomacy.

Later the Marathas withdrew after negotiations.


March 1769 – Hyder Ali launched a daring march to Madras, reaching the city’s outskirts.

The British, unprepared, sued for peace.



Outcome

Treaty of Madras (April 1769) signed.

Both parties restored conquered territories.

Agreed to mutual defensive alliance (if either was attacked, the other would help).


British betrayed this term in the Second Anglo-Mysore War (1780–1784).


Significance

First major setback for the British in South India.

Enhanced Hyder Ali’s prestige as a military strategist.
