The independent city is located in the Rhine-Main region and borders directly on the neighboring city of Frankfurt am Main , with which it forms a contiguous urban area. Offenbach and Frankfurt are cooperatively linked through the FrankfurtRheinMain Regional Association .

The industrial city, originally shaped by Huguenot culture , was primarily known as a center of the leather goods industry . Today, the city is a service center and, with the Offenbach University of Art and Design (HfG), a university town with a strong design cluster . Offenbach is also home to the headquarters of the German Meteorological Service and, since July 2025, the Meteorology Department of the Federal University of Applied Administrative Sciences . The city has the highest percentage of residents with a migration background among major German cities
