The Tu-160M “White Swan” is the world’s fastest and longest-range strategic bomber, now fully modernised with new engines, avionics and stealthy Kh-101/102 cruise missiles that fly 5,500 km. One aircraft based in central India can reach any target in Asia without refuelling and return safely. For India, adding even a small fleet of six to eight Tu-160Ms would quietly complete the air-breathing leg of the nuclear triad, giving New Delhi the same rapid, deep-strike option that only the US, Russia and China currently possess. With Arihant submarines at sea and Agni missiles on land, the Tu-160M would offer flexible, recallable deterrence and the ability to hold distant targets at risk in hours rather than days. Russia has already restarted Tu-160M production and remains India’s most trusted long-term partner. A limited purchase or lease-to-own deal, possibly paired with technology sharing, could bring this unique capability into IAF service by the early 2030s. It is a realistic, high-impact option worth serious consideration as India shapes its future strategic posture.
