EXPLORING FRASER/K'GARI ISLAND: Lake Mackenzie, Eli Creek & 4x4 Adventures with K'gari Safari Tours

Описание: Embark on a journey to K'gari Island (Formally known as Fraser Island) with us! Our tour with K'gari Safari Tours included 2 nights and 3 days of adventure. From driving 4x4's on the beach to visiting the iconic sites like Lake Mackenzie, Lake Wabby, Champagne Pools, and Eli Creek, this trip was filled with unforgettable experiences. Come along with us as we discover the gems of K'gari Island!

What the tour included:

Pick up at either Hostel (Nomads hostel in Noosa) or BP garage in Rainbow Beach
Lunch for 3 days, Dinner for 2 nights and Breakfast for 2 mornings
4x4 driving on the beach - most people drove multiple times (4-5)
Glamping Tents with 4 people per tent, each in separate beds.
Visits to Lake Wabby (Emerald Lake), Champagne Pools, Lake Mackenzie and Eli Creek

Why is Fraser Island now called K’gari Island?

I don’t think our response will be as detailed and do the story as justice as our tour guides did, so apologies!

Fraser Island took it’s name after Captain James Fraser and his wife Eliza Fraser, who were in a shipwreck in 1936 and taken in by the Butchella Aboriginal Community, along with 11 other survivors. Unfortunately, Elizas husband died, along with her child.

The Butchella people looked after Eliza and made sure all of the survivors were kept in good health, always had food and a safe place to sleep. After 52 days, Eliza and the rest of the people on the shipwreck were rescued. Eliza started telling the story of her time on the Island with the Butchella people, and soon realised that negative stories created a bigger reaction. She started spreading lies about her time on the island, claiming she was ‘captured’ and used as a slave.
The stories were then exaggerated throughout different news articles and later became a famous story, leading to the Island to be called “Fraser Island”. Although she constantly changed her stories and they were disputed by the other survivors, Westerners still believed that the Aboriginals were ‘savages’ and ‘cannibals’, which caused huge implications for Indigenous people.

The name was officially changed back to K’gari Island, which is translated to ‘Paradise’ in 2023!

Tom and I would like to give a huge shout out to our Tour Guide Iain, who was just an incredible person! This wasn’t just a job to him, he was shaping other peoples lives and sharing his passion for the Island. He taught us so many valuable life lessons during our time on the Island, as well as growing our awareness of litter and how to keep Australia clean and litter free!
