In this video I will show you how to make this adorable Olson-style Pocket Mask designed to fit a variety of stuffed toys and 18” dolls. More than just cute, however, this mask gives children the opportunity to process current events in an important way. As we know, role play is a valuable tool for children to help them work through new and unfamiliar circumstances. Through play, children are able to demonstrate questions and concerns that they may find otherwise hard to articulate. This pocket mask gives them a prop with which to do that. Children can even role play changing filters made of cotton fabric or paper towels in the pocket. NOTE: Not intended for children under 3.
This may be a great donation to day care centers, preschools, or pediatric hospitals. For tips on making many of these at once, please see my video on Making the Olson Mask Quickly which shows the adult mask version, but the principles and practices are the same.
This is also a nice, small first hand sewing project. If you want to learn how to construct projects with just a needle and thread, please see my video on how to Hand Sew the Olson Mask which is linked below. Though the process and stitches are the same, the seams are much shorter.
