This 12 pound case shot was found on a private construction site in central North Carolina by workers who were digging a foundation. A member of a surveying crew then acquired the ball from them. I was then contacted about it. I cannot assign a specific battle to this relic, as from the information that came with it, the ball was recovered more than 10 miles from the nearest known Civil War activity. I acquired the ball from the member of the survey crew. Making me the third owner since discovery.
The tin/zinc/lead Bormann fuse was corroded almost entirely away, exposing most of the brass under plug.
This video is a record of how I went about rendering the shell inert, although the underplug was exposed and allowed moisture to render the black powder harmless.
My plans from here are to remove the lead case shot from inside and preserve the body of the shell through reverse electrolysis to remove rust, and then to boil it in paraffin wax to remove all moisture and permanently preserve the ball.
Then it, and it’s case shot contents, will be placed on display in the local museum’s Civil War Collection.
