The battle was begun with an attack by Reno's detachment, ordered to take as many noncombatant prisoners as possible in order to force a surrender. He was checked by a stream of Indian warriors and forced to retreat, suffering heavy losses as he crossed the Little Bighorn.
Custer's battalion was forced back from the village to a hill that later become known as Custer Hill (or Last Stand Hill). They created defensive positions out of bodies and horses. Shooting between the two sides continued for some time until a decisive cavalry charge led by Crazy Horse broke through the line.
All of Custer's companies were annihilated, while Reno's and Captain Benteen's columns managed to hold out for a day on a bluff known today as Reno Hill before being relieved by reinforcements.
