"Operating Instructions: The Machine Doesn't Think Of War" - for Disklavier automatic piano and live electronics, 2022.
The automatically played piano part was created using spectral analysis of the noise of an aircraft, an explosion, and a baby crying, taken from a video showing a warplane attacking a house. The original sound was stretched from 3 seconds to 4.5 minutes to make every detail discernible before being transcribed for piano.
The score was neither composed nor performed by a human: the pitches and rhythms correspond directly to the original sound. The dynamics and range were adjusted to ensure audibility and to emphasize important details.
From the second minute, the music changes drastically: after the thunderous explosion, a child begins to cry.
