Sky News host Andrew Bolt says it seems Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was “played like a fiddle” by China during his visit to the country.
“All that Xi seems to have wanted was to show the world it can treat Australia like dirt for seven years ... and we’ll still come rushing to Beijing when summoned,” Mr Bolt said.
“One good thing in Albanese’s favour. China did drop many of the trade bans against Australia in the lead-up to this meeting because I guess it figured it actually wanted what we were selling.
“But at least Albanese had not caved into China in the meantime, just like the previous Turnbull and Morrison governments didn’t either … but that’s about as far as this goes.”
Mr Bolt cautioned Australians to be “very careful to read anything” into Mr Albanese and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s meeting except that the Prime Minister was “allowed to go and talk to the dictator, who smiled and gave him nothing”.
