After COVID sentenced the country to solitary confinement, the call for people to get outside has been getting louder and louder. From the look of the crazy increase in national park and various outdoor sports participation numbers, it seems like people have listened.
Fly fishing is one of those increasingly popular activities, and people are looking to get further from the beaten path to find good water and peace and quiet.
If you are looking for a camper, backpack, or mountain bike friendly fly rod that will travel in a super-compact package, Redington has come out with the Trailblazer — a new 6-piece travel fly rod that is the minimalist traveler’s friend.
At the International Fly Tackle Dealer Show in Salt Lake City, Free Range American staff writer Matt Smythe puts the rod through some paces and it makes a solid first impression.
The rod comes in 7’6” 3-weight and 9’ 5-weight versions. The former is perfect for small water, tight conditions, and small dry flies or nymphs. The 5-weight is designed for larger streams or rivers where you might fight the wind and have to reach out to fish at greater distances.
The 6-piece design is built to cast with the same feel of a 4-piece fly rod. The more pieces, the more chance of losing its feel or action — the rod’s stiffness or flexibility
While new fly anglers might not appreciate the difference in rod action, in the hands of a more experienced angler, the feel is definitely noticeable, though. The Trailblazer is not as willowy as a fiberglass rod, but also not so stiff that soft cast are a chore.
Casting the small stream 3-weight, Smythe can tell that if he went from dropping small dry flies on pinpoint spots while being surrounded by brush or trees to tying on bigger bugs and fishing a stream running through an open field, the smaller rod would make the transition just fine.
The versatility of the rods is what makes them so good — from the packable 6-piece configuration to the short and longer range touch when casting. Whether you’re a dirtbag minimalist headed for the backcountry, an avid hiker that likes to stop and fish along the way, or the angler that keeps a rod in the truck “just in case,” the Trailblazer is a true travel rod that will take what you and the trail give it and serve you well for seasons to come.
