Continuing my little recording project, I have chosen to play the most important moments from Wagner's Die Meistersinger Overture as performed by the Chicago Symphony (Fritz Reiner, 1960-Arnold Jacobs, tuba).
As an opera tuba player, I can tell you that I would typically play this entire opera on the F tuba as it blends extremely well with all of the other sections and sounds bigger than you would think! 😉 However, having studied in Chicago with Rex Martin and knowing that Jacobs played this (almost) exclusively on the York tuba, I decided to go this direction. (F tuba next to me in case anything went wrong 😅)
I hope that you enjoy. It's a real treat to revisit these recordings and hear how they phrased, the specific length of the notes, and the way they blended into the orchestra color. Lots to be (re)learned here.
More to come! Thanks for watching 🌷🇨🇦🇱🇺
