In this video we take a look at the usage of a spectrum analyzer (HP 8563A) in conjunction with a cheap noise source and directional couplers to make scalar network measurements of return loss (VSWR). This setup along with other uses of the HP 8563A spectrum analyzer are compared with respect to cost and modularity against the capabilities of available professional and hobbyist grade VNAs for use in RF testing activities.
