On August 5, 1861, just weeks after the war began, about 500 Union Home Guards under Col. David Moore defended the tiny river town of Athens against nearly 2,000 Missouri State Guard troops led by Col. Martin Green. Outnumbered nearly 4-to-1, with the Des Moines River at their backs and three enemy cannons roaring, the blue-clad farmers and locals held firm for two hours at dawn. Better rifles and sheer grit turned back the secessionist assault, keeping northeast Missouri in Union hands and sending the gray coats retreating across the river.
This original bluegrass tune captures the underdog spirit, the crack of rifles, the boom of cannons, and the pride of plain folks standing for the Union. Banjo rolls, fiddle drives, mandolin chops, and high-lonesome harmonies bring the tale to life!

📍 Fun Fact: The Battle of Athens wasn’t just the northernmost Civil War clash west of the Mississippi—it actually spilled over into Iowa due to some seriously bad Confederate aim! Confederate artillery crews (with their three cannons) kept overshooting the Union positions in Athens, Missouri, sending cannonballs sailing across the Des Moines River and landing in the tiny Iowa town of Croton on the opposite bank. No major damage or casualties there, but it makes Athens the only Civil War “battle” that technically touched Iowa soil—thanks to poor marksmanship rather than any invasion plans!
