Paris erupts as education protests turn violent, with police firing tear gas and deploying water cannons to disperse demonstrators in the French capital.

Watch LIVE as protesters block streets, fires burn across parts of Paris and police move in during nationwide demonstrations over France’s education system. Footage shows firefighters tackling blazes while officers use tear gas and water cannon at Place de la Nation.

The protests involve high school and university students, parents, teachers and trade unionists demanding more funding, better school conditions, replacement teachers and repairs to ageing school buildings.

France’s Interior Ministry said 86,000 people had joined demonstrations outside Paris by midday. Government figures also say at least 215 teenagers and 715 police officers have been injured since the movement began, while more than 6,100 people have been arrested.

The protests began with school blockades in the Paris region in September before spreading across France.
