Handcrafted in artisan batches, Simple Soaps for Simple Folks provides quality soap for the whole family. Recently profiled on KAAL ABC News 6 in Rochester, MN- the owner Shanna Wegman talks a bit about how she got started and what makes her soaps so appealing to so many customers in the SE Minnesota region.

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Made in the Midwest returns this fall with a small company out of Dover. Four years ago, Shanna Wegman took an unusual present from her then boyfriend, and turned into a business. It's called "Simple Soaps for Simple Folks."

Using goats for soap is how Wegman makes a living. "I feel that my soaps are an extension of myself," Wegman said.

The shapes, scents and personality in her soaps, are produced thanks to the 4 goats on her certified organic dairy farm. "I think people tend to under value hand made products," Wegman told us. "There are kinds of people with incredible talent and craft that most people aren't even aware of."

Wegman is the oldest of 4 girls. She grew up on a farm in southwest Wisconsin. "I never thought i'd be making soap. I always wanted to be a farm wife."This farm girl is living that dream, while running Simple Soaps for Simple Folks in Dover.

It all started when her husband, then boyfriend, welcomed her to Minnesota by getting her two goats. "My mother made hand soap one day and it dawned on me that I can use that milk in the soap," Wegman said.

Left over milk she'd been using to make cheeses, yogurts and drinks. "I gifted it to friends and family and they really appreciated it and encouraged me to do more with it," Wegman added.

And later selling it in Rochester at farmers markets. "the booth evolved into lots of soap."
And now, a store, unique to southeast Minnesota that she can call her own.
