ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Henry Weber (1900-1991) was musical director for Chicago's WGN radio from 1934 to 1958. Trained in Vienna under Richard Strauss, he became the youngest conductor of a major opera company when he led the Chicago Civic Opera Orchestra at age 23. He was the first American to conduct opera in Italy.

Erich Leinsdorf (1912-1993) worked as assistant to Bruno Walter and Arturo Toscanini at the Salzburg Festival before becoming music director of the Cleveland Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic, and later the Boston Symphony Orchestra. His Silvertone recordings likely date from his Rochester period (1947-1955).

Georges Enesco (1881-1955) was a Romanian composer, violinist, and conductor regarded as one of Romania's greatest musicians. He made numerous American tours. He later made many albums for the budget label Remington Records in the early 1950s, not long before his death.

Ted Dale (1910-1975) was a composer and conductor who later worked in film music. Inés Carrillo remains somewhat mysterious - possibly a pseudonym common in budget recordings of the era.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT:

The Silvertone Record Club represented democratic music distribution in post-war America. These weren't reference recordings, but they introduced millions to classical music through the Sears catalog. The orchestras listed were likely pickup groups of professional musicians assembled for these budget sessions - a common practice that allowed legitimate conductors and competent musicians to earn extra income.

These recordings were pressed on quality red vinyl and sold for modest prices through mail order, bringing classical music to Americans far from concert halls. The programming was carefully chosen - pieces many knew from cartoons and newsreels, creating bridges between popular culture and classical repertoire.
