In this video, I, Stas Demianchuk, explore what sex in the Middle Ages was really like - not as it is often imagined today, but as a living and complex reality of everyday life. I show how people in medieval Europe actually lived and loved, what they thought about intimacy, the body, and desire, and why medieval sexuality cannot be reduced either to total repression or complete freedom.
I also focus on how sex, marriage, and the Church coexisted in the Middle Ages: why virginity was considered an ideal, yet most people chose marriage; how the Church regulated intimate life; and how medieval medicine viewed sex as part of human health. Through stories of premarital relationships, marital duty, conception, contraception, spiritual abstinence, and prostitution, we will see that medieval people were far closer to us than it might seem at first glance.
This video is based on historical research, primarily The Fires of Lust: Sex in the Middle Ages by Katherine Harvey, along with a range of medieval written sources.
