I exclusively saved this video for when the R42 subway cars retire. On February 12th, 2020, the R42 cars built by St. Louis Car Company have retired from service with a farewell trip on the A line. These cars have been serving New York since 1969 (50 years) and debuted on the A and N lines. These cars were also featured in the movie "The French Connection" in a spectacular car chase scene.
These cars have been replaced by NYCT's most recent rail car series, the R179s. In this video, the R42 cars were put back into service at the right time when I arrived in NY for my 2 week trip. All 298 R179 cars were taken out of service due to safety issues with the doors and the indications. As a result, the R42s were put back into service when they were nearly about to be scrapped. This video was my last minute chance to ride these cars on the J Line. I hope you all enjoy!
