In Part 11 of our verse-by-verse study through the Book of Revelation, we enter chapter 11 — a rich, symbolic chapter blending the measuring of the temple, the ministry and martyrdom of the two witnesses, and the sounding of the seventh trumpet with its announcement of God's kingdom.
Key sections covered:
Measuring the temple (11:1–2): John is given a reed to measure God's temple, altar, and worshipers — but the outer court is left unmeasured and given to the Gentiles to trample for 42 months (symbolic of a limited period of tribulation). This highlights God's preservation of His faithful people amid persecution.
The two witnesses (11:3–14): Two prophets clothed in sackcloth prophesy for 1,260 days (3½ years). They are symbolized as olive trees and lampstands (echoing Zechariah 4), with power to shut heaven, turn waters to blood, and strike with plagues — yet they are killed by the beast from the abyss in the great city (figuratively Sodom/Egypt where their Lord was crucified). Their bodies lie unburied for 3½ days; the world rejoices. Then God breathes life into them; they ascend to heaven in a cloud amid earthquake and terror — the second woe is past.
Seventh trumpet / Third woe (11:15–19): Loud voices in heaven proclaim: "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever." The 24 elders worship, declaring God's reign, judgment on nations, reward for prophets/saints, and destruction of destroyers. The temple in heaven opens; the ark of the covenant is seen amid lightning, rumblings, earthquake, and hail — signaling the fulfillment of God's covenant promises.
This chapter offers profound encouragement: God's witnesses persevere, death is not the end, and ultimate victory belongs to Christ the King. The temple vision reminds us that the Church is measured and protected even in trial.
