Urban planners of the 1980s thought that tearing down half of the buildings along State Street through downtown New Haven and widening the road to 100 feet across would revitalize the city. Spoiler: it made it worse. Now, a project is in place to fix the mistakes of the past and return State Street to a modern version of what it used to be.
This video provides a brief history of State Street, its context within the city, and why it's now undergoing a major change. Then, we'll take a walking tour from south to north through the project area and discuss all the different improvements at each intersection.
