Leona Heidern is an original character from The King of Fighters, who makes her first appearance in KOF '96. She also makes appearances in the Metal Slug series. Her official nickname is "The Silent Soldier." Leona was born in a nameless village, where she lived her childhood with her family in peace. But one day one of the Orochi heralds, "Goenitz of the Wild Wind", came to the village and demanded to speak to Gaidel, who was actually also an Orochi herald. He ordered her to join him in his attempt to free Orochi. However Gaidel refused as he had been living with his family in peace and wanted nothing to do with Orochi again. Goenitz was enraged, and warned before leaving that Orochi would not spare traitors. He looked at Leona for a moment, touched her head, and left. As night fell, Leona began to fall ill, suffered a severe headache and soon began to cough up blood. Gaidel was alarmed, since this was a sample of the so-called Riot of the Blood, a process caused by the blood of the Orochi lineage, although the one who suffered it had much more strength, it also causes madness and bloodlust. They tried to calm her without success and dominated by this state, Leona murdered the people of the village, including her own family. Goenitz returned to the village, put his hand on Leona's bloody head and ordered her to sleep and that she should wake up when the time was right. Leona started walking aimlessly in the jungle. She was found by Heidern, who had been hired to investigate the strange event related to the village of Leona, and not knowing the true nature of it, decided to take Leona as his adopted daughter. On one occasion, he saw Leona climb a very tall tree with only her hands. Surprised at this display of energy, he thought that it would be better for the girl to stay with him and train her as a soldier. He learned all his techniques, due to an incredible ability to cut with his hands. Heidern was amazed at Leona's progress: it was as if she had been born to fight.

It wasn't until KOF96 that Leona received her first official mission: she was to take Heidern's place on the Ikari Warriors team during The King of Fighters tournament. His companions were the mercenaries Ralf Jones and Clark Steel, his mission was to investigate Geese Howard, the head of organized crime in Southtown, who had entered the tournament in search of an unknown goal. Knowing that anything Geese seeks could only spell trouble, the new Ikari team began their mission. Even having been eliminated in the tournament, Heidern ordered the Ikari Warriors to attend the stadium, where the finals would take place, to investigate and it is there that a massive gust of wind completely destroyed the stadium. Goenitz attacked the winning team, the representative team of Japan (Kyo Kusanagi, Benimaru Nikaido and Goro Daimon), being finally defeated thanks to the help of Kyo's rival, Iori Yagami and the tournament organizer, Chizuru Kagura. But Goenitz had a moment to remind Leona of her past, full of death and blood. After the tournament, Leona is dejected. The horrors of the past grew stronger during the events of The King Of Fighters '97. Towards the tournament finals, Leona, along with Iori Yagami, suddenly entered the Blood Riot, induced by Orochi himself. Both were successfully controlled, and Orochi was sealed again. However, Leona was so pressured by these events that she wanted to end her life, but was stopped by Ralf, who restored her will to continue living, just like Gaidel, who supernaturally explained to her from the afterlife that no he must face his past and she accepts it and cries for having received those words from her father.
