CEO Tony Fernandes revealed these plans during the Paris Air Show, highlighting a strategic shift to connect Europe through the Middle East, which he sees as a gateway to efficient global travel using a multi-hop approach. Despite recent regional instability due to conflicts involving Israel, the US, and Iran, Fernandes remains confident in the viability of opening a hub in the Gulf. While many airlines have suspended operations in the area, AirAsia sees an opportunity to offer longer-haul, affordable travel routes by leveraging this geographic advantage. The specific Gulf airport for the new hub hasn’t been confirmed, but the airline has been strengthening its presence in the region with new routes to Riyadh, Dammam, and increased flights to Jeddah. The move comes at a time of intense competition and rising operational costs for Asian low-cost carriers. The recent closure of Jetstar Asia, owned by Qantas, underscores the pressure smaller budget airlines face, particularly in markets like Singapore, where infrastructure expansion has driven up costs. Fernandes criticized airports that refuse low-cost carriers, stating that this limits access to a growing market and reaffirmed AirAsia’s intention to adopt a Ryanair-like strategy by using alternative, less expensive airports. AirAsia is also shifting its business model from a traditional point-to-point system to a more connected network strategy, aiming to increase the number of passengers making connecting flights beyond the current 8%. Fernandes believes this transition will create a more profitable model, allowing the airline to maximize efficiency and market reach across its 160+ destinations, with Kuala Lumpur remaining the central hub. As part of its European expansion, AirAsia plans to fly not only to major cities like London, which Fernandes calls the “only big glamour destination,” but also to secondary cities including Cologne, Manchester, Glasgow, and Dublin. The goal is to provide travelers with affordable access to lesser-served locations, while partnering with other low-cost carriers operating in these regions, especially at well-connected airports like Gatwick. Beyond aviation, Fernandes continues to push for diversification through non-airline ventures such as fintech services, logistics, and aviation consulting. Although the planned US listing of these businesses via a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) had previously stalled, he noted efforts to revive the listing are underway. This multi-sector strategy is part of Fernandes' broader vision to strengthen AirAsia’s resilience and profitability in the post-pandemic era. The war has blocked smooth operations of many aviation companies with rising supplier cost as well as surging oil price.I believe any expansion plan right now is not a good idea; however, it will serve as a competitive advantage for early growth strategy to companies that wish to grow quickly despite the rough economic struggles.
