Описание:
In Book 18, a local beggar named Iros tries to drive Odysseus out of the palace, not knowing he challenges a king in rags. Urged on by the suitors, Iros provokes a fight; Odysseus knocks him down with a single blow. The suitors laugh, unaware that their own judgment is foreshadowed. Later, Penelope appears before them in radiant dignity, winning their gifts and subtly reclaiming authority within her own home. The tension in the hall tightens: greed rises, tempers loosen, and the disguised king watches every shifting shadow with quiet resolve.

Original:
A swaggering beggar named Irus challenges the disguised Odysseus at his own palace door, turning the hall into an arena for the suitors’ amusement. Irus boasts, Odysseus endures, and the fight ends in a single devastating blow that exposes the king’s hidden strength. As the suitors cheer, Odysseus studies every face, quietly sorting friend from foe.
Penelope, inspired by Athena, descends among the suitors and cleverly turns their arrogance to her advantage, winning gifts while revealing nothing. Tension erupts again when Eurymachus taunts Odysseus and throws a stool across the room, forcing Telemachus to assert control.
Book 18 raises the stakes inside the palace: a king in disguise tests the limits of his enemies, a queen maneuvers with quiet brilliance, and the suitors—unaware they are dancing on the edge of ruin—grow bolder by the hour.
Lyrics:
“A beggar met a beggar in the hall.”
“The gods watched from their wine-dark veil.”
Iros barked and spat his scorn,
Out, old man, your time is torn!
The suitors clapped to see the fight,
A stool was raised in midday light.
But rags can wrap a lion’s flame—
One blow, and Iros learned his name.
Laugh loud, O sons of gold and meat—
The beggar’s wrath is not yet sweet.
You cheer his hand, you cheer your fall—
The gods have come to judge you all.
She came in light, a queen unbowed,
Among her maids, she stilled the crowd.
No gifts? she smiled. No bride-price here?
Their pride bent low before her spear.
They brought her gold, they brought her chains—
But still she walked with grief in veins.
Feast deep, O fools with shining hands,
The tide you stir is not of man’s.
The beggar waits, his blade unseen—
And darkness sits where you have been.
