A song born from a real encounter in the Pilbara, where a young dingo visited a campsite beneath The Governor, drank from a water bowl, and ran off with it. This track weaves that memory into a broader meditation on the dingo's role as an ancient guardian of the outback, the threats they face, and the responsibility we carry to ensure their howls never fall silent. Acoustic Australiana folk with atmospheric desert production.
The title Guardian of the Rains comes from Aboriginal mythology.
The Governor is a hill in the Pilbara by the side of the Great Northern Highway. It is across the road from the Mt. Robinson rest area.
Lyrics (c) Marc Glasby
I heard the dingoes howling where The Governor stands tall,
A haunting sound in evening light, an ancient timeless call.
the keepers of the outback, the voice of hills and plains,
the spirits of the dreamtime, guardian of the rains.
In morning light I saw him, walking round our camp,
His ears were up, his eyes were keen, the bush was still and damp.
A nosy, wary yearling, too close for his own good,
My kind is a danger he'd not yet understood
Oh dingo of the Dreamtime, learn your lesson well,
Mankind is an enemy right from the pits of Hell.
He shoots your kind and poisons you, drives you from your land,
and leaves your corpse for ants to clean, upon the desert sand
But there you are, a trusting soul, trotting to and fro,
there's much about this wicked world that you have yet to know.
Grow strong my dingo brother, be cunning and be wise,
teach your young ones how to live, beneath these southern skies
Oh dingo of the Dreamtime, learn your lesson well,
Mankind is an enemy right from the pits of Hell.
He shoots your kind and poisons you, drives you from your land,
and leaves your corpse for ants to clean upon the desert sand
Stay far away from my kind, our poisons and our guns,
get out in to the back blocks where the old man emu runs.
Seek the wisdom of your pack mates, stay strong and wild and free,
Run flat-out for your very life, when you see the likes of me!
I hear the dingoes howling, where The Governor stands tall,
We must preserve these spirits, we cannot lose their call.
They are the keepers of the outback, the voice of hills and plains,
the spirits of the dreamtime, guardian of the rains.
Our job is to protect them, to see them running free,
To wake to silence in the night - that must never be!
To wake to silence in the night that cannot come to be!
