IDAHO FALLS –
VO: From weighing the flour, to frosting the cakes, one local baker loves learning from his grandfather.
SOT: “My Grandpa’s got almost 60 years of experience in the Bakery. He got his bakers license over in Germany when he was just a boy. He’s been in the Bakery since he was 16,” says Ben Borsik manager of Carstens Bakery.
VO: Ben Borsik and his grandpa Willi Carstens’ work side by side making traditional baked goods at Carstens’ Bakery.
SOT: “Simple baked, good old fashioned stuff,” Borsik says.
VO: Since Carstens started the bakery almost 50 years ago he’s been using original recipes.
SOT: “This is our specialty called beehive cake, made with brown sugar and honey pudding inside, whipped cream on top. We’ve been making them here for 48 years. Made them over in Germany too,” Carstens says.
VO: Another Carstens favorite is the cream cheese brownie. Customers say they’re addicted.
SOT: “My cream cheese brownies are a really popular item, I sell those in pans all the time,” Borsik says.
STAND UP: I’m trying the cream cheese brownie today, and can I tell you, I’m already in love. Mmmm. Delicious.
VO: Local say they don’t just love one pastry but enjoy a variety of baked goods.
SOT: “I love the oatmeal cookies. They are so soft. I love the texture of the cookies,” customer Teresa Torres says.
SOT: “One of my favorite things when I come to this place are these pig ears. They are wonderful. They’re so tasty,” customer Viodelda Browning says.
VO: Borsik says he’s doing all he can to learn from his grandpa and preserve baking traditions unique to Idaho Falls.
SOT: “He’s been teaching me everything that he knows, and I’m going to continue on as best as I can for him,” Borsik says.
