This article details a remarkable hardware modification by Brazilian modder Paulo Gomes, who managed to upgrade an Nvidia GTX 970's VRAM from 4GB to 8GB. This achievement challenges the conventional idea of GPU upgrades, proving that significant enhancements to older cards are indeed possible, extending their relevance in modern gaming.

The intricate process involved desoldering the original 512MB memory modules and replacing them with 1GB modules. A crucial step was then tweaking the GPU's resistor. This adjustment was necessary to enable the GTX 970, which was never designed for such an upgrade, to properly recognize and utilize the increased VRAM.

After extensive soldering, the modified card successfully detected 8192MB of VRAM. The true test came with benchmarking. The stock 4GB GTX 970 scored 866 in the Superposition Benchmark, while the upgraded version achieved an impressive 1576, nearly doubling its original score.

Even more remarkably, the VRAM-upgraded GTX 970 outperformed a stock Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB), which scored 1575 in the same benchmark. This single-point victory demonstrates the significant impact of the VRAM modification, allowing an older card to compete with, and even surpass, a newer generation GPU.
