Watchful Eyes of the Spotted Owlet!!!

Kapra Lake, tucked away in the eastern part of Hyderabad, is one of the city’s most treasured urban wetlands.
Once a vast irrigation source, today it stands as a quiet refuge for birds, fish, and all kinds of wildlife that have learned to live alongside the growing city.
Early in the morning, when the light softens the ripples of the water, you can hear the calls of kingfishers, Bee-eaters, herons, and cormorants echoing across the lake.
But hidden among the tall, dry palms at its edge, there’s a much smaller and quieter resident — the Spotted Owlet.
The Spotted Owlet— is one of India’s most familiar little owls.
Barely 20 centimeters tall, it’s compact, alert, and full of personality.
Unlike most owls, the Spotted Owlet is active even during the day, especially in the early morning or just before dusk.
It often nests in tree hollows, old buildings, and even lamp posts — anywhere it can find a safe cavity to rest and raise its young.
What makes this bird so captivating are its eyes — bright yellow and intensely expressive, as if it’s always assessing the world around it.
Watch closely how it turns its head almost completely around — that flexibility allows it to keep an eye on everything without moving its body, a perfect adaptation for both hunting and staying hidden.
The Spotted Owlet feeds mostly on insects, small rodents, and sometimes tiny birds. It’s a silent hunter, swooping down from a perch with incredible precision.
But when it’s not hunting, it’s quite social — pairs can often be seen calling to each other with a distinctive chattering call, especially around their nesting sites.
These owlets are known for their curious nature. They often peek out of their tree holes, observing anyone who comes close — exactly like this one here at Kapra Lake.
It’s rare to see them disturbed by people; they seem more amused than afraid, turning their heads in all directions, studying us as much as we study them.
Despite being small and common across much of India, the Spotted Owlet plays an important ecological role. It helps control pest populations and signals a healthy balance between urban life and nature.
Finding one within the city reminds us how resilient wildlife can be — adapting, surviving, and thriving even in the heart of human spaces.
As I filmed this little owl, it hardly moved — yet its stillness said everything. In that moment, it wasn’t just a bird inside a tree; it was a quiet symbol of coexistence between nature and the city that surrounds it.
