@KimShimonishi... Thank you for your comment clarifying the history of Sunnyside. We truly apologize for the misinformation we put out in the Tanya's Pie & Grill video, which we have removed.
Below is your comment for reference to anyone who wants to read it.
@KimShimonishi
Hi there,
I’m the daughter-in-law of the original owner of Sunnyside, and someone sent me your video. A lot of what was said about Sunnyside is not accurate, and it’s been very hurtful to our family, so I wanted to share the actual history.
Tanya, her husband, and another partner leased Sunnyside from my mother-in-law for 10 years. They never owned the business. Sunnyside has been a family-run restaurant since the 1970s, started by my husband’s grandmother and her sisters who came from Japan.
Over the years, my father-in-law taught Tanya and her husband the family recipes, which had been passed down through their family. When they decided they wanted to lease Sunnyside, my mother-in-law took them under her wing. She taught them how to run the business, even sitting with them and the accountant to help them understand everything.
After 10 years, they were not able to agree on terms to renew the lease, so the lease simply was not renewed. At that point, they began telling people that my mother-in-law was “taking their business,” which is not true. They never owned Sunnyside – they were leaseholders who operated the restaurant for a period of time.
Because of the misinformation being spread, both Tanya and Sunnyside hired attorneys, and a cease and desist order was issued related to the claim that they owned Sunnyside. The only thing they walked away with was the phone number.
Sunnyside then closed for almost two years for a full renovation, which is why many people thought it had shut down permanently. But Sunnyside is still here, still under the original family ownership.
Unfortunately, because food itself cannot be copyrighted, the family recipes that were shared with them in confidence are now being used by them in their own business. That’s painful for us, but legally, there isn’t much we can do about that part.
What is most upsetting is that your video, which reaches a lot of people, is helping spread a story that makes it sound like our family stole a business from Tanya, when in reality, it has always been our family’s restaurant and they were leasing it for a limited time. Your video is unintentionally harming a small, mom-and-pop family business that has worked honestly and very hard for decades.
I’m asking respectfully that you please make a follow-up video correcting the story and clarifying that:
• Sunnyside has been owned by the same family since the 1970s
• Tanya and her partners leased the restaurant for 10 years but did not own it
• The lease ended because they couldn’t agree on new terms, not because their business was “taken”
It’s heartbreaking to see their family’s name and history misrepresented like this. Please help us get the truth out and stop the damage being done to Sunnyside and to my in-laws’ legacy. 💔
Thank you for reading and for considering a correction.
