Starting with an upside-down 5 gallon bucket and some leftover steel mesh reinforcement, the base of the tree stump is made. The bucket allows the stool to be hollow making it much lighter and easier to move than a solid concrete fake tree stump. The core could also be made of other lightweight materials that provide a good structural base for the lath and concrete such as styrofoam.
The bucket is wrapped with steel mesh to add strength reinforcement as well as give the cement mortar mix a sound vertical surface to climb to form the trunk of the tree stump. Once the steel is secured to the bucket, a cement mortar mix is made using two parts sand, one part cement, concrete acrylic fortifier replacing about 5% of the total water volume, and water.
The addition of the concrete acrylic fortifier changes a few things about the concrete - it retards the initial setup of the mix, it changes the feel of the mix when troweling, it makes the finished product more resistant to water permeation and stronger. It is a good addition to a concrete or mortar mix for outdoor applications, especially when used for decorative or ornamental concrete designs.
The mix is applied to the base form using a margin trowel from the bottom up. The top of the stool has a thicker layer of concrete mortar applied to it for added strength and durability. After allowing the newly applied mortar mix a few minutes to begin hardening, a wood grain texture roller is used on the sides of the trunk to give it a realistic look of tree bark. Another texture tool is used to apply the center rings of the tree stump.
Once the stool has cured, it is painted using a variety of watered-down acrylic paints (about 10 parts water to 1 part paint), spray bottles and paint brushes. The finished product is a very strong and durable life-like tree stump stool that will last years and years. You can keep it in tip top condition by applying a water-based concrete sealer regularly. Although it can stay outside all year, for longevity of both the stool itself and the painted finish, store it indoors if you live in an area with cold winter climates.
