There are many stories, myths and beliefs surrounding Illikal Kallu. According to one legend, the medicinal plant Neela Kodiveri, which appears in the puranas, is cultivated in this area, and it is believed that anyone who harvests this crop will become rich. Another story concerns the expulsion of the Pandavas from the forest. Legend has it that the Pandavas family lived in this area and one day Bhima, one of the five Pandavas brothers, asked Panchali to provide him with food. But Panchali was a little late in serving the food, which made Bhima very angry. Enraged, Bhima threw a 'urakka' (a long pestle used for pounding rice and other grains) and the place where the 'urakka' fell became a stream known as 'Urakapara Todu'.
