Lagunillas is a traditional urban neighborhood located near the historic center of Malaga, in southern Spain. It lies just north of the old town and close to Mount Gibralfaro. Known for its working-class roots, street art, and ongoing urban renewal, Lagunillas represents an authentic side of Málaga beyond tourism.
The neighborhood developed mainly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Malaga expanded beyond its medieval walls. Lagunillas became home to workers, artisans, and small trades linked to the city’s industrial growth. For decades, it was a modest but vibrant community area.
In the late 20th century, the district experienced decline due to depopulation and lack of investment. In recent years, however, Lagunillas has gained attention for its cultural initiatives, social movements, and street art, becoming a symbol of grassroots urban transformation.
