Adam Smith. Father of capitalism. Prophet of the "Invisible Hand." We've been taught he believed greed is good and markets regulate themselves.
Here's the problem: That's not what he actually said.
The Adam Smith worshipped by corporations is a fictional character created to justify the very things the real Smith warned us about.
🔍 WHAT YOU'LL DISCOVER:
The Invisible Hand Myth How many times did Smith use this phrase in his entire life's work? THREE. And none of them mean what you think:
• First use: Superstition (ancient humans fearing Zeus)
• Second use: Gluttony (rich landlords forced to feed workers)
• Third use: Fear (anxious merchant avoiding foreign investment)
Not divine market wisdom—just human imperfections with unintended consequences.
The Moral Philosopher Before writing about economics, Smith wrote The Theory of Moral Sentiments—arguing that society is held together by sympathy, not self-interest. He believed markets need moral guardrails, or they become predatory jungles.
The Enemy of Monopolies Smith lived in a corrupt mercantilist empire dominated by the British East India Company. He wrote The Wealth of Nations as a hit piece AGAINST monopolies, warning that business owners conspire to "raise prices against the public."
The Great Heist During the Cold War, Western economists systematically rewrote Smith. They stripped away his moral philosophy, deleted his attacks on monopolies, and inflated one phrase into a theology justifying deregulation and corporate power.
Why This Matters By believing the myth, we let tech giants devour competitors, allowed financial systems to crash economies, and mistook corporate freedom for human freedom. We're living in exactly the world Smith feared.
The real Adam Smith believed markets should serve society—not the other way around.
The Invisible Hand isn't coming to save us. The market is a tool, not a god. Our economy's outcome depends on the choices we make and the rules we enforce.
It's time we stopped waiting for magic and started doing the work.
