Описание: This is general information about UK tax, not advice for your situation. It doesn't replace advice from a qualified accountant, tax adviser or financial adviser.

Taking money out of your pension flexibly for the first time? Your provider often has to use an emergency tax code on a month 1 basis, which treats a one-off payment as if you were going to receive it every month. Only one twelfth of your personal allowance and tax bands are used, so far more tax can be taken than you actually owe.

The numbers (LITRG example, 2026/27, outside Scotland): a £50,000 taxable drawdown payment on an emergency month 1 code has £20,878 deducted. If that were the only income that year, the tax due would be about £7,486. Scottish taxpayers have different bands, but the same principle applies.

It is not rare: from April to June 2026, HMRC repaid £50,353,656 on 12,612 reclaim forms (Pension schemes newsletter 183).

Which form? Took part of your pot and not taking more this tax year: P55. Emptied your pot and still have a job or another pension: P53Z. Emptied your pot, stopped work and have no other income apart from the State Pension: P50Z. The quickest way is usually to claim online. If you do nothing, HMRC usually reviews it after the tax year ends, and further payments from the same pot this year are often corrected through your new tax code.

Before you withdraw: once you take taxable money out flexibly, the money purchase annual allowance can cut what you can pay into defined contribution pensions with tax relief to £10,000 a year. Big withdrawals can push some of your income into a higher band, so spreading them across tax years can help. Pension Wise offers free, impartial guidance if you are 50 or over.

If you are self-employed and file Self Assessment, MTDKit is HMRC-recognised software for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. Signing up is free at https://mtdkit.com and the Self Assessment plan is £2.99 a month.
