Описание: How do you even start writing a 140,000 PhD thesis? Actually it was over 250k words in total.😱

I get a lot of questions around how to actually write a large thesis - how did I discipline myself to write so much, what are my writing processes, how long did it take, what programmes did I use to write in, how did I do the lit reviews? - so let’s chat about that…

First - I didn’t do ‘lit reviews’ in the same way as many of you today have to. In fact there wasn’t much literature for me to review at the time.

Instead I ‘wrote up’ my evidence as I went along…and in short those ‘chunks’ of writing started to form the chapter plan for what later became my actual thesis.

The ‘research’ for my PhD actually started way back during my degree - so that’s over 30 years ago! Yikes!

My degree dissertation was the start of my work into Children’s Jewellery History with an essay that went from 3,000 to 10,000 words. This formed the interest in my subject and allowed me to prove I was creating ‘new’ knowledge - the literal purpose of any PhD proposal.

So you could say that writing has been a natural part of my process for a really long time.

I also work around ‘chunks of time’ - it’s how I fit ALL the many things I do into my working week. So I do set up ‘writing blocks’ or ‘content blocks’ or ‘research blocks’…and I make writing part of my every day habit or routine.
