It's Crazy, It's Exotic, It's Jaipur

Описание: We visit Anoothi, a women’s group textile enterprise. They have started teaching women how to use block printing, which was traditionally a man’s craft. Any women can work there and learn skills to develop themselves and start their own businesses. Anoothi is another project supported by Gadventures. I bought a scarf from there as I wanted to support them.

We had lunch on the way to Jaipur, then went to our hotel. After a freshen up, half of the group went to the markets to shop and eat and the other half of us went to a cookery class. This class was in a very beautiful house and grandmother (nanagee) and granddaughter taught us how to do a number of traditional Rajistani dishes.

We started with vegetable pakoras. Her granddaughter asked if anyone wanted to cook, so Mike and I were the first to get up. One of the fascinating elements were the tins of spices that they use regularly in their food. These are little metal bowls containing cumin, coriander power, turmeric chilli 3 types, all contained within a larger tin. They also had what looked like a cigar box that contained cloves, bay leaves and cardamom. They used black salt, which was unfamiliar to me. Rachel and Doug also got up to do some cooking and we had a fabulous meal in a beautiful house.

Next day we took photos of the outside of the Pink palace as we were passing it on our way to Mootha lake. Jai told us how to cross the busy road, “keep walking, do not run and DO NOT hesitate” we felt chuffed that we finally learned to cross a road in India. We then continued on to
Maotha lake and saw a snake charmer near the lake. We needed to abandon our trusty bus to use Jeeps that managed the steep road and narrow lanes to the Amber fort and Palace.

This palace was probably the most beautiful one I have ever seen. Our guide “You Hoo.” told us all about the various rooms and the playful architecture.There was a beautiful mirrored room that sparkled in the light. We got our photo taken there.

After visiting we had a photo opportunity at the floating palace, Jal Mahal. We then went for street food in Jaipur for Samosa and Lassi.

After this we visited the beautiful City palace in the pink city. We had about 45 mins free time so some of us went for well earned refreshments at the Cafe Agora , others chose to shop/ look around Jaipur.

Then we went on an orientation walk of the pink city. We saw fruit and veg stalls, the spice market and lots of shops selling pasta and other foods.

Next stop was a bus ride to take part in the Bollywood dancing class at Dalga.That was fun and we had a good meal there too. We met 2 Brits called Luke and Danny who were teachers in Dubai. They were doing a self guided golden triangle tour.

Next morning there was an extra curricular choice of bicycle or balloon ride. Both were early 5 am starts so Rob and I opted to do neither! It was fortunate because we both were a little unwell during the night. Jaipur belly has struck! Imodium has been administered and today we have a long bus journey back to Delhi.

It will be sad to say goodbye to some of our party, but it is lovely that some are also going on to the next leg of our journey with us. We will also say goodbye to our skilful driver, Ghambir, our excellent navigator Rohit and our most wonderful guide, Jai.
